Practice! (and get up at 7 am every day)

I signed up for Creative Sprint shortly after resigning my stressful corporate job and then promptly forgot about it until the emails started showing up September 30th. I thought it would help sharpen my artistic skills, which get rusty when not in use, and give me something fun to do while I figured out my next move. In the previous month I had felt rather unfocused and drifting. This gave me something to concentrate on and in trying to stick to the schedule of completing things daily, I realized that I needed more of a schedule in my day to feel productive (as much as I enjoyed waking up any old time I wanted!). During the challenge, I’ve also been doing volunteer work and took a trip to Phoenix, both of which made completing things on a daily basis more difficult. The other thing that made it difficult on some days was self-imposed. I decided at the beginning that everything I did would be insect themed (because I’m an entomology nerd) and so some of the assignments really made me scratch my head as to how I could include insects. I managed to do so, and I did it without purchasing anything new (another self-imposed limitation). Having completed the challenge, I now realize that I should be practicing more to keep myself from creative complacency; making a drawing every day, or as often as I can, because it takes a lot of energy to bring myself out of “rustiness” and this can be discouraging. Structure and practice would have remained something I should be doing but didn’t do. The 30-day challenge willed me to pick up the pencil. All of my projects can be seen on my blog: https://onionioniart.blogspot.com/p/sprint.html

I don’t think I can pick a favorite assignment, but the ones I enjoyed most set limitations (i.e. make something with/based on/inspired by XYZ, rather than the ones that were more freestyle) since these felt more challenging.

Not all the projects are winners, but that’s ok,  it was fun!

That’s really cool! And I totally get the limitations vs. freestyle thing. Thanks so much for sharing!
