Project Mend-A-House Offers Hope to Vulnerable Seniors and Veterans in Prince William County

Mike* lives in a house that used to be run down and broken.  As a wheel chair bound double amputee veteran, with a loving and gregarious personality, living in a house with no ramp was painful and overwhelming.  Without the financial means to pay for a ramp, Mike was obliged to throw his wheel chair down the steps and then scoot down behind it every single time he wanted to leave his home.  And then reverse the process when he returned.

But thanks to Project Mend-A-House those challenges are in his rearview mirror.  Thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers in Prince William County, Mike has a shiny new ramp and is now able to leave his home whenever he wants or needs to do so.  Volunteers also made additional repairs to his home to address other safety issues.

There are more than 6,000 people in Prince William County, like Mike, who are low or extremely low income, veterans, seniors, or living with disabilities, and who are unable to afford to maintain their homes by addressing safety issues.  Often, our services keep larger problems from happening such as fixing a leaky faucet when it occurs to avert thousands of dollars of work need to remove mold or repair other damage if the leak is not fixed.  This is just one example of the challenges faced by our clients.

At Project-Mend-A-House we believe everyone deserves to live with dignity and independence regardless of their circumstances, and our wonderful volunteers work daily to make that happen.  We would love to find a way for you to get involved with us.  We are truly neighbors helping neighbors.  Visit www.PMAH.org to learn more, donate or volunteer.
