I Love You True

Every night when I was a little kid, my mom or dad, and sometimes both of them, saying me a special song they made up just for me. I loved listening to that song because it made me feel very, very good inside, and then I almost always had happy dreams.

But one night when I had a fever, that didn’t happen. I had all kinds of dreams – and some of them were really scary. Then, I heard the special song and remembered all the words:

I love you now
I love you then
I love you if
And I love you when

I love you here
I love you there
The whole world over
Anytime and anywhere

And any way you are
Or anything you do
I love you always
I love you true

I love you near
I love you far
I love you all
The way to the stars

I love you deep
I love you strong
Until the end of time
We will belong

And when I woke up, my mom and dad were both there. My mom gave me a huge glass of water to drink and my dad gently patted me on the head. In just a little while, I was feeling all better.

When I got bigger and went to school, sometimes it was hard for me learning something new, even though I tried the best I could. Some of the other kids made fun of me and called me names. My friends stood up for me and told everybody about all the things I was really good at, but I felt sad anyway.

After my mom and dad heard what was going on, they didn’t just wait for bedtime to sing the song. They hugged me for a long time every day when I came home from school and sang the song for me then too.

Soon I began singing it to myself whenever I felt bad or I had something difficult to do. It’s amazing how much it helped me!

Well, now I’m all grown up myself and I have two children – twins, a girl and a boy. Every night I sing to them the same special song mom and dad sang to me. And when we visit Grandma and Grandpa, or when they come to stay with us, everyone happily sings out all the words together:
