I’m a SWOFTY

I used to be an older woman without a specific identity. I am not a wife, a mother, a grandmother, or even a significant other. But according to an article I read recently there is a new label that applies to me. I am a SWOFTY–Single Woman Over Fifty.

We are an emerging demographic segment of confident older women who are well-groomed, physically fit and can rock a pair of leggings with the best of them.

“There’s a lot of baggage around being a single older woman,” explains demographer Mark McCrindle, “but these women are breaking that stereotype and reinventing what that life stage looks like. Their collective power in terms of health, education, fashion, beauty–everything–puts a lot of energy in this social category.”

Well, that sounds good. And according to academic and social commentator Dr. Karen Brooks, “These women feel empowered and incredibly comfortable in their own skin.”

Yes, I can relate to that. I am beautiful, healthy, and have fabulous hair that happens to be grey. I love to cook and eat. I think my own thoughts and make my own decisions. I have close friends and family. I love my community and volunteer for causes that matter to me.

But wait, there’s more. Did you know that Kim Cattrall, Elle MacPherson, Sheryl Crow, Heather Locklear and Paula Abdul are SWOFTYS?

Okay, I am not really one for labels and like all labels this one could be used in a derogatory manner. Or, it could be empowering. What do you think?
