Car modification is a growing business. From designer wheels to off-roading machines – the possibilities are endless!

Car modification is considered to be any altercations to a car that change it from the manufacturer’s specifications. This is different from repairing a car’s faulty parts, as car modification aims to completely change or improve.

Usually, car modification is done for performance or cosmetic reasons. Modifications can be big or small. Upgrading the stereo system is usually a common alteration, while others will completely transform a car!

However, before jumping into the world of car modification, it’s important to consider the pros and cons. The pros are easy to see – your car will look good while maximising power. Yet, the cons can’t be discarded. Below is a list of things to consider before modifying your vehicle.

1. Cost

Car modification is not cheap. Buying the desired components adds up. If you’re considering making this a pastime, it’s essential to have plenty of savings in the bank.

Plus, altering a car directly impacts its worth. Most cars will lose value after modification. If the plan is to resell, there won’t be much of a profit.

2. Planning

For the most cost-effective results, it’s best to plan. Take time to decide what the goal is.

Some alterations could affect future modification plans. Or, you might decide to specialise in a specific type of car (drag racing, off-roading, etc). Therefore it’s important to plan so no money is wasted on unnecessary parts.

3. Legalities

Most importantly, you must be aware of the legality of car modification. There are several rules on what can and can’t be done to a car.

Lights

Headlights must be coloured yellow or white. Rear lights must be red. Any other colour is against the law. Neon lights are also banned to reduce the risk of distraction.

Exhausts

Altering an exhaust to be louder after it has been ‘type approved’ is also illegal. The police can pull you over if an exhaust is too loud.

Tinted Windows

While tinted windows provide many positives, it is illegal to have a tinted windscreen that doesn’t allow at least 75% of light through. The front side windows must also let at least 70% of light through.

4. Safety

Although car modifications often look aesthetically pleasing and cool, it’s important to remember your safety and others. An alteration should never have the possibility of harming someone.

This is why it is important to complete desired modifications through a qualified mechanic. They will be able to advise you on what is possible without putting yourself or others in danger.

5. Insurance & Warranties

Car modifications will affect your insurance. The amount you pay will probably increase due to the altercations made to the vehicle.

However, this shouldn’t put you off telling your insurance company. No matter if the change is big or small, it must be announced to your insurer. If you fail to specify car modification to your insurer, it is commonly considered fraud.

Overall

While car modification can transform cars into trendy, powerful accessories, there are several points to ponder – especially legally. No matter what you decide to do, it’s important to keep yourself and other road users safe.
